	About the Artist

Joan Fenicle was born and raised in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She had been entranced by New Mexico since she was a child and came here to stay in the 1970s. While not much matches the scenic beauty of the Rockies in Colorado, New Mexico has an ancient beauty and without a doubt holds more surprises. You never know what Anasazi ruins, little village or old church lies at the end of that dirt road! Rudolfo Anaya wrote that there are places on this earth where the powers that flow between earth and sky are stronger than most, and New Mexico is one of those places.

Joan and her husband, Jose Martinez, plus five dogs, two adopted Mustangs, chickens and some pea-fowl, live on five acres of land near Placitas, an historic village nestled in the mountains just northeast of Albuquerque.

Joan is an active member of the arts communities in both Placitas and Albuquerque. She has participated in the Placitas Studio Tour every Mother’s Day weekend since moving here in 1999. She works part time as photo editor for albuquerqueARTS magazine, as editor of undergroundARTS (a weekly on-line supplement to the magazine), and as coordinator of Albuquerque’s Artscrawl events.

She is a long-time member of Rainbow Artists, a women’s art collective, and is a founding member of Perspectives, a Placitas-based photography group.

In art, as in life, it’s all about the journey - the experiences. The paintings and photographs are just a way of committing these experiences to history and sharing them with you.
