Forgotten Places

Much time has passed since these photos were taken (mucho tiempo ha pasado) as they say in New Mexico. This is an ancient place and reminders are everywhere. The old buildings and ruins fascinate me; it’s not just the physical places, but the feeling of old souls that draw me in. I am finding that many places I photographed 30+ years ago are no longer there, others will soon return to the earth. Thanks to technology, I can scan these my old negatives, slides and photographs - repair and enhance them - and share them.

Horse&Hotel-Guadalupe03

The settlement of Guadalupe is deserted now, but it once boasted a hotel/bar, post office, several adobe houses and a church and oratorio (private chapel). It is about 25 miles west of San Ysidro at the edge of Cabezon Wilderness. The road is dirt but well maintained, although we suspect it might get challenging in wet weather.

There are several small settlements in the Cabezon area dating back to when the entire region was prime sheep grazing country. Climate change along with over grazing caused the water table to drop and while there are still inhabited ranches, the towns are pretty much empty. Typically they were settled by folks who were all kin to one another. Guadalupe was also known as Ojo de Padre, named for a spring there.
